[Confirm partner hotels and inclusions.] If you are arranging your own stay, Durban offers options for every budget, from beachfront hotels to guesthouses in quieter suburbs such as Umhlanga, around 20 minutes north of the city centre. Staying close to the venue will save time each morning.
Ride-hailing apps are widely used in Durban and are the easiest way to get around. Many hotels also run shuttles to popular areas. For site visits, the conference provides transport, so you won’t need to arrange your own. If you plan to explore after the conference, you can hire a car, but remember that South Africans drive on the left.
The local currency is the South African rand (ZAR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and ATMs are easy to find. Tipping of around 10 to 15 percent is customary in restaurants.
Like any large city, Durban is best enjoyed with some common-sense precautions. Keep valuables out of sight, use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps rather than accepting lifts from strangers, and avoid walking alone in quiet areas at night. Your hotel can advise on which areas to visit and how to get there safely.
Durban has a warm, subtropical climate for most of the year, so pack light clothing, sunscreen and a hat, with a light jacket for air-conditioned rooms and cooler evenings. Business casual dress is suitable for conference sessions, with smart attire for the Mayoral Reception.
If you can, stay a few extra days. Durban’s beachfront promenade, the Victoria Street Market, the uShaka Marine World and the city’s famous bunny chow are all worth your time. KwaZulu-Natal is also home to the Drakensberg mountains and several game reserves within a few hours’ drive, making it easy to combine business with a safari or a weekend away
