Every year, Durban hosts conferences where investors, government officials and international buyers gather in the same building. And every year, many of the local business owners who would benefit most never walk through the door. Sometimes it is the ticket price. Sometimes it is the assumption that “those events aren’t for people like us.”

reSURGEnce Durban 2026 is designed to change that. From 24 to 27 October at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC, local entrepreneurs can attend for free with the Local Delegates Pass.

What the Local Delegates Pass gives you

The Local Delegates Pass includes conference access and refreshments at no cost. That means you can sit in on the sessions, hear from the speakers and, most importantly, be in the room with the people who can help your business grow.

There is no catch. Registration is required so the organisers can plan numbers, but you won’t be asked to pay.

Why reSURGEnce made it free

The theme of this year’s conference is Decreasing Barriers by Increasing Access. It would make little sense to talk about access while charging local businesses to come in.

reSURGEnce was founded on a simple idea: Black and under-represented businesses don’t lack talent or ambition. They lack access to capital, to markets, to information, to decision-makers and to partnerships. The conference exists to open those doors. Making attendance free for local SMEs is the most direct way to do that.

Who should register

If you run a business in Durban or the surrounding area, this pass is for you. It is especially valuable if you are:

  • A small or micro business owner looking for your first investor, lender or larger client.
  • A woman entrepreneur. Strengthening women’s entrepreneurship and growing SMMEs is one of the conference’s stated priorities.
  • A manufacturer, farmer or agro-processor who wants to sell beyond South Africa.
  • A creative business in media, fashion, music, food, tourism or entertainment.
  • A supplier to government or corporates, or hoping to become one. Access to government contracts and procurement is a key focus.
  • A young founder who wants to learn how deals, funding and equity actually work.

What’s actually in the room

The value of a conference is not only what is said on stage. It is who you meet in the corridors, at lunch and between sessions. At reSURGEnce Durban, that includes:

  • International delegates from the African Diaspora, many travelling from the United States, who are looking for partners, suppliers and investment opportunities on the continent.
  • Government and civic leaders, including mayors and officials from cities across Africa and the United States.
  • Investors and funders. The organisers describe access to a wide network of venture capitalists, development finance institutions, angel investors and corporate funders.
  • Speakers such as entrepreneur Ndaba Mandela, Kampala’s Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo, former Zambian Vice President Dr Nevers Mumba and Silicon Harlem founder Clayton Banks.

For a local business, one good conversation can be worth more than a year of cold emails.

The ten focus areas

The conference programme is organised around ten areas where growth and transformation are possible:

  1. Digital infrastructure, technology and emerging technologies
  2. Agriculture, agro-processing and manufacturing
  3. Capital access, banking and funding opportunities
  4. Business and trade in America and the Americas
  5. Marketing, branding and global market access
  6. Education, workforce development and community empowerment
  7. The creative economy, media, entertainment and tourism
  8. Real estate and property ownership, development and management
  9. Wealth creation, money management and intergenerational wealth transfer
  10. Smart cities, urban regeneration and infrastructure development

Whatever your sector, at least one of these will speak directly to your business.

How to make the most of a free pass

A free ticket is only valuable if you use it well. Here’s how to get the most from your days at the ICC:

  1. Register now. Registration helps the organisers plan numbers, so don’t leave it to the last day.
  2. Pick your goal. Decide on one or two outcomes, such as meeting a potential investor, finding an export partner or learning about procurement.
  3. Prepare a 30-second introduction. Say who you are, what your business does and what you are looking for. Practise it until it sounds natural.
  4. Bring business cards or a QR code that links to your website, WhatsApp or LinkedIn.
  5. Have a one-page summary ready. If someone asks to know more, you can share it on the spot or by email the same day.
  6. Talk to international delegates. Many have travelled thousands of kilometres specifically to meet local businesses. Don’t wait for them to come to you.
  7. Follow up within 48 hours. Most connections go cold because nobody sends the second message.

“But is it really for me?”

Yes. You don’t need to be a large company, have audited financials or already be exporting. reSURGEnce is built for businesses that are growing, not only those that have already arrived.

Often, the most valuable conversation at a conference starts with a small business owner simply saying, “Here’s what I make. Who should I talk to?”
